There is no better way to spend your ✨ Golden Birthday ✨ than surrounded with the most important people in your life, and in the most spectacular location in the world, New York City. Growing up I remember thinking I had the most inconvenient birth date ever. Like, I honestly couldn't stand the FOMO after Christmas and had to come before New Years Eve? It seems like my cravings to celebrate couldn't take it longer. I spent my childhood never being able to celebrate with school friends my birthday, as everyone would leave for the holidays. However, after many years of growing up to do and maturing, I realize two very important lessons.
Number 1: Life gave me this birth date for a reason. Not to feel inconvenient, or unable to celebrate with friends, it gave me this birthdate to always celebrate it with family. No matter where we are we always look for the way to spend Christmas and New Years together. And as me and my little brother live far away from Colombia, this yearly reunion is the best birthday I could ever ask for.
Number 2: Being home does not mean being back in Colombia. Home is not a place, it is the people that fill your heart just by being there.
In order to make this day the most iconic day for a foodie, we had to begin with a New York icon: The Bagel! We went for one of Manhattan's favorites. Their diversity in cream cheese and bagel flavors, for lactose intolerant, sweet-tooth, & spice lovers, was impressive. We had to get some of their Specialty Egg Sandwiches in an ✨Everything✨ seasoning bagel 😏 with a warm coffee and some crispy fries that tasted like thin hash browns.
After walking through the High-Line we reached the Chelsea neighborhood, and had to hit one of the best food markets in the city, the Chelsea Market. There we had a lil snack in "the test Tacos of NYC". Their menu is simple and their kitchen resembles the one’s we get to see in the streets of Mexico. I had to get in a corn tortilla their “Adobada con todo”. Shout out to my friend Ernesto for giving me a Fried Cheese Empanada as a bday gift.
To sit and and enjoy, we had to get some Israeli Street-Food by Chef Eyal Shani, the caterer of the original whole roasted baby cauliflower with tahini sauce. Their selections of stuffed pitas was stellar, with anyone you go for you will pleased. However, if I was there again, I would definitely go with the Folded Cheese Burger. Not the most Israeli BUT, the patty had a crispy cheese crust folded around it. Making each bite a crunch made in heaven.
